Alkaline: The New Celebrity Diet

Truth be told, we often look to Hollywood to dictate the latest and greatest trends. Whenever a celebrity speaks out about a certain issue or endorses a particular product, the world takes note and immediately jumps on the bandwagon before you can say the word “fad”. For example: attempting to order any dress that Kate Middleton wears publicly? On back order for weeks and weeks! Similarly, trying to get a reservation with the trendy restaurant recommended by Gwyneth Paltrow’s website “Goop?" No openings for the next six months.  And how about those ridiculous “waist trainers” worn by the Kardashian girls? Sold out, immediately. No matter how common or how extreme the trend, if a star says it’s great, people generally listen.

The latest celebrity endorsed movement comes courtesy of morning show host and fitness fanatic, Kelly Ripa. She claims the alkaline diet changed her life, explaining that the cleanse cured her from chronic muscular pain and other ailments. After Kelly’s public declaration of love for the eating regimen, a handful of other famous faces stood up and expressed their shared their alkaline affinity. Elle Macpherson, Victoria Beckham and even Gwyneth herself, credit the diet for changing their lives, their health and their physiques. But, before we all run out to buy alkaline diet how-to’s and cook books, let’s unpack exactly what it is and how it works!

Get pH-Balanced

First and foremost the alkaline diet deals with regulating your body’s pH balance. According to experts – controlling the body’s acidity (also known as alkalinity) with diet helps reduce internal inflammation. According to the theory, eating too many acidic foods promotes acid build up, which can cause weight gain, lethargy, disease and many other unwanted health issues.

Those who follow the eating plan are discouraged from consuming acidic foods such as meat, diary, alcohol, coffee, sugar and high gluten carbohydrates. As for what is allowed, alkaline eaters reach for foods such as certain non-acidic fruits like bananas and watermelon, veggies like kale, beets and yams, as well as low glycemic carbs like buckwheat and quinoa.  Nuts and seeds are also recommended. Unlike a lot of other celebrity endorsed “diets,” according to Ripa, this eating plan actually encourages eating a lot of food. She explains, “I actually eat much more on this cleanse than I do in my actual life, but it’s what you eat and how you eat it." Sounds promising!

The Payoff

As for the health benefits, reducing inflammation with this diet increases energy and decreases the risk of diseases like cancer and diabetes. And, according to researchers, it not only encourages better health, it also promotes easier weight management and a multitude of anti-aging benefits. All in all, I’d say this is one celebrity health trend worth trying!
