5 Natural Anxiety Remedies

Anxiety can be overwhelming, and anticipating anxiety can be just as bad.

Especially with the majority of us isolating right now, it’s important to be taking care of our mental health as much as possible. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to be with proactive and prepared for times when we might feel overly anxious or stressed. Here are a few preventative measures to help avoid high anxiety, as well as a few natural remedies for acute anxiety to have on hand in the moment:

1. Meditation.

A self-care or morning routine that includes meditation is an amazing, preventative measure for avoiding or reducing anxiety. Studies have shown multiple benefits to meditation, from increasing self-awareness and mood, to even improving quantity of hot flashes in perimenopausal women due to its cortisol lowering effects. It’s one of the tried-and-true ancient techniques that gives us better perspective on life, but also lowers our stress hormones, giving our stress organs a break. It can be one of the only times during the day where you get to just relax, let go, and think about absolutely nothing.

2. Incorporate adaptogens into your routine.

Adaptogens are amphoteric herbs that help tone the nervous system and produce effects that are needed. If we need stimulation, it adds excitatory elements, and if our nervous system is overstimulated, it helps calm it down. This is produced by regulation of homeostasis with the Hypothalamus-Adrenal-Pituitary Axis. Adaptogens also have many other beneficial neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, anti-depressive elements.  Including an adaptogen supplementation such as Stress Tincture can really help with stress response and anxiety long term.

3. Choose B vitamins over caffeine for energy.

Any stimulant is not great for the nervous system. Its best to be nourishing our stress hormones with vitamins and minerals that are drained during times of stress, such as the B’s and magnesium. Try to cut back on caffeine, and supplement with a B Complex.

4. Have passionflower ready.

Passionflower is a calming herb that’s amazing to have on hand when experiencing anxiety. If you are experiencing constant low grade stress, are unable to calm or sleep because of it, a passionflower supplement such as Orange Natural’s Tincture, St. Francis’ ValeriCalm blend, or a Passionflower and Valerian Root Tea at night can be very soothing.

5. Supplement with Kava when needed.

Kava is an amazing root with numerous compounds that relax the body and mind, helping to ease anxiety. Its more potent than passionflower, and it can really help calm the body when experiencing acute anxiety or stress, as well as restlessness or insomnia. Some of the kavalactones compounds have also been shown to enhance dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters responsible for good mood. Life Choice provides it both in Capsules or Tranquility Liquid form.
