Detoxing: How to Cleanse Your Body

Cleansing or detoxifying the body is important for multiple reasons. First of all toxins, from the environment and toxins produced as by products of our metabolism harm our cells, our organs, and our entire body. This accelerates the aging process, weakens the immune system (thus predisposing us to infections), depresses our energy and mood, and predisposes us to chronic inflammatory diseases (some examples of which are diabetes, arterial disease, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease etc.). So, what is the best approach as to how to cleanse your body?


First of all, a good cleaning/detox product should have the following attributes. It should support the function of the liver (the liver is the primary detoxifying organ in the body), it should have laxative properties as to facilitate the passage of stool, it should help prevent the colonization of the intestines by toxin producing bacteria, it should help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract, it should have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and ideally it should have diuretic properties to facilitate the expulsion of toxins through the kidneys in urine. The following are the best natural agents with regards to how to cleanse your body.


For liver support by far the best are Milk Thistle, Dandelion root and Artichoke leaf. Milk Thistle has very strong antioxidative properties that specifically target the liver. Dandelion root has hepato (i.e. liver) protective properties. It also increases the level of detoxifying enzymes in the liver. Artichoke leaf is also hepato-protective but it also supports the survival probiotics which help in preventing the colonization of the intestines by toxic bacteria. Although detox products seldom contain probiotics, these beneficial bacteria should be incorporated into any detox program.


With regards to natural laxatives, please refer to the constipation section on Natural laxatives are important in detox products as they prevent constipation. Constipation increases the time of passage of stool which leads to more toxins being absorbed into the blood stream. Laxatives also facilitate the cleansing of the intestines.


Maintenance of a healthy gastrointestinal tract is best achieved with probiotics, fibre (e.g. psyllium husks), and a diet rich in vegetables and healthy plant oils. It is also maintained by avoidance of fast food, processed foods, animal fats, foods high in sugar and foods fried in vegetable oils.


With regards to diuretic properties, well known and effective natural agents are Burdock root, Stinging nettle and Dandelion root. They facilitate the elimination of toxins by increasing urination. By facilitating the flow through the kidneys, they also contribute to the health of these organs.


When seriously considering an effective detox program please also remember to drink plenty of clean spring water, limit alcohol consumption, avoid tobacco products, avoid recreational drugs, and have a healthy diet rich in vegetables, healthy plant oils and lean protein sources as well as a regular exercise program.
