Check in with yourself, have you been indulging a little too much during these past few months of quarantine?

I’ll be honest, I definitely have until I had to get back on the candida cleanse.

Candida is an overgrowth of yeast in the body, which can cause bad bacteria to thrive in the digestive tract. It’s important for us to keep sugar intake low in order to prevent candida from overspreading. If you struggle with brain fog, skin flare ups, yeast infections, constant colds, you may actually have a candida overgrowth. This is definitely a topic I would love to talk more about!

Today, we are chatting about a few ways to keep our sugar intake low and what we can do to reduce those cravings!

Firstly, don’t allow yourself to feel bad about giving into cravings. It’s actually a really good idea to honour your cravings at the moment they come up, but I do think for many of us (myself included), we often go overboard.

So, the next time you are craving something sweet, allow yourself to honour the craving, but start to ask yourself why you may be having this craving. Is it because you have not eaten enough? Are you feeling stressed? Are you using it as an excuse to not have to cook? These are really good questions to consider when you feel your cravings may be out of control.

I know we often hear this as a strategy to kill cravings, but in all honesty, I do think it is important! We are often dehydrated, especially in the summer. Instead of drinking water when a craving hits, try to really stay on top of your water intake all throughout the day. This can help flush toxins and keep your body feeling more aligned.

Another tip I would strongly recommend is to add bitter vegetables into your diet. Bitter vegetables help to stimulate digestive juices (this helps your body digest food better), and also kill off some of those sugar cravings. Adding kale, dandelion, raddichio, and radish in the diet can really help to change your palette. Aim to have at least one of these vegetables each day.

Be prepared! Truly, meal prepping is one of the best ways to curb your cravings. As soon as you open the fridge to a full section of already cooked foods, you will be ten times more likely to reach for this rather than going to the store to pick up ice cream. It may take some time to practice meal prepping, but I do really believe that it is one way we can guarantee to stay on track. I love making tons of sweet potatoes, cut up veggies, lentils and salad for the week.

It’s also crucial to make sure you are eating enough during the day. If you feel like you are ravenous by the end of the night, it may be a good idea to write out what you ate that day. I guarantee you will be shocked at just how little it was! We want to stick to having our three meals as those help to balance those blood sugar levels and keep the sugar cravings away. Make sure to always add a protein source to every single meal (lentils, chickpeas, chicken, tofu), a healthy fat (avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil), and a fibre source (vegetables). These three will stabilize blood sugar levels to ensure you are keeping your sugar cravings low and energy high.

Lastly, check for hidden sugars in your crackers, chocolate, salad dressings, pasta sauces and more. You may be super surprised to see how many companies actually add more sugar to your foods! This itself can cause you to crave more sugar as the body is now dependent on it.

If you do want to start cutting out sugar in the diet, remember to start slow. Sugar is extremely addictive, so we cut it all out at once, not only will we notice huge withdrawals, but we’ll be ten times more likely to binge on it again. Start by removing white sugar out of the diet, or out of your coffee. From there, you can take out the added sugars you found in your dressings and sauces. The slower you go, the better and more lasting the results will be.
