Make the Most Out of Your Essential Oils - Even in Your Cleaning!

Before you reach for your Lysol and Pine-sol, here’s an important thought: Although many strong household cleaners smell good, they are often filled with synthetic chemicals that can be harmful to the body. With an ingredient list that is harder to pronounce than learning a new language (mipa-borate, myristalklonium saccharinate, ethanolamine…), conventional cleaning products contain a long list of toxins linked to negative reproductive and nervous system effects. If you’re starting to think cleaning is becoming a more complicated task than it needs to be, we've got your back. Enter: essential oils.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are named because they are composed of the “essence” of a plant. Plants contain powerful compounds in their seeds, flowers, roots and barks - these can be harvested so that you can conveniently use the potency of the plant. If you’ve ever opened a bottle of essential oil before, you know how strong the aroma is. The best part? It’s all completely natural and has no negative side effects (unless you’re allergic to a specific plant)!

Reasons to Start Using Essential Oils Today

Essential oils are a great natural alternative to many of the harsh, synthetic products in the conventional market. Each oil comes from a plant with unique beneficial properties and can be used in many different ways.

Essential Oils are Cost-effective

It’s true that some oils are expensive (looking at you, rose essential oil!), but keep in mind that as the plants go through a distillation process to get their oils extracted, some plants yield oil more easily than others. In fact, some plants like roses require 2500lbs of roses to create 1lb of essential oil! When you buy an essential oil, a little goes a long way. For the number of benefits and uses you get for each drop, it’s worth the cost. Even a 5-10ml bottle can last for months as you’re only using a few drops each time.

Essential Oils Smell Great Without Relying on Toxic Ingredients

When a conventional household product contains the word “fragrance” in the ingredients list, it can represent a complex mixture of a dozen chemicals that are enough to trigger allergies, migraines and even asthma. On the other hand, essential oils have a strong, pleasant aroma due to their natural plant compounds. Rest easy knowing your house can smell great without compromising your health!

Essential Oils are Naturally Antimicrobial

Did you know that tea tree oil is not the only natural disinfectant? All essential oils contain compounds called aldehydes, which have a broad antimicrobial effect. The next time you diffuse your essential oils in the house, you have one more fighter against sneaky pathogens (viruses, fungi, bacteria)!

Essential Oils are Multi-Purpose

The most common use for essential oils is dropping them in a diffuser to spread the scent around the room, but we hope that you are not missing out on their other amazing benefits.

Lemon Essential Oil for Cleaning Jar Labels

After you’ve peeled off most of the sticker remnants, create a paste of equal parts baking soda and dish soap, plus 5 drops of lemon essential oil. Leave on for 5 minutes and then rinse. If it is still sticky, add a few drops of lemon essential oil directly to the jar and wipe with a damp cloth. The glass jar will be good as new!

Lemon Essential Oil for Cleaning Stovetops

Even the greasiest glass stovetops don’t stand a chance with this potent oil! Simply add 10 drops of oil to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. If you need a stronger solution, you can add more lemon essential oil to your liking.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Freshening the Air

Instead of relying on air freshener sprays, essential oil diffusers in the room can go a long way. Not only do they smell great, but the antimicrobial effects will also help sanitize and cleanse the air. It’s especially useful come cold and flu season, and for those who have nasal congestion or difficulty breathing.
