The first rewrite of this guide in more than a decade has put a particular focus on choosing more proteins that come from plants, while also cutting both ‘milk and alternatives’ and ‘meat and alternatives’ food groups from the guide altogether. The new protein foods section of Canada’s Food Guide features options like lentils, fortified soy beverages, nuts, seeds and tofu. Despite the mixed reactions from the reveal of this new food guide, we can all agree on one thing: We can all benefit from eating more plants, which are bursting with phytonutrients to help us thrive and fight disease.

1. Easy to digest
With plant-based protein comes lots of fibre, which is crucial for proper digestion. Unfortunately, a large portion of the population gets less than half of their recommended daily intake of fibre, so making the switch to more plant protein means more whole foods that are easier for your body to digest.
2. Better for the environment
The foods we eat have a bigger impact on the Earth than you may think. Choosing to eat plant-based foods is a choice to use less energy, water, fuel and planet-damaging emissions than animal products.
Being alkaline can have a very positive effect on our overall well being, from strengthening the immune system to reducing inflammation levels and stress. If we consume too many foods that are acid-forming, like meats and refined foods, we may lower our body’s naturally alkaline pH levels which can have a negative impact on our health.
