Wedderspoon Q & A
Vitarock spoke with Fiona Nelson, Vice President of Sales in USA and Co-founder of Wedderspoon USA to learn what makes manuka honey unique, the history of the brand and some of her favourite honey recipes!
How long has Wedderspoon been around?
Wedderspoon was created in Canada in 2005 by Catherine Wedderspoon and Sebastien Martin.
What is the inspiration behind your company?
The Wedderspoon story begins in 2005 when Diane Wedderspoon paid a visit to her daughter, Catherine, in Canada. Diane ran out of Manuka Honey that she brought with her from England. Manuka Honey was a staple in Diane’s daily health regimen and she found that Manuka was not widely available in North America. This sparked an idea in the minds of Catherine and her husband Sebastian that would grow into what we now know as Wedderspoon Organic. Realizing how long manuka honey had been sold successfully to support health in European and Asian markets years prior, the couple set out on a quest to bring manuka honey to North America. After meeting with various bee experts across New Zealand, they established a partnership with beekeepers who matched their values and standards and today, we are still working with the same beekeepers. With supportive partners in place and a stable manuka honey supply chain intact, the company started small, diligently knocking on the doors of locally owned Canadian health food stores and attending tradeshows to introduce manuka honey to the market and educate consumers.
About a year after Wedderspoon first launched in Canada, I officially launched Wedderspoon Organic USA from my home in Malvern Pa. (Catherine and I are old family friends). Since then, the company has greatly expanded and grown its offerings worldwide and built a state of the art packing facility in New Zealand with a dedication to ethical and sustainable Manuka honey production. Wedderspoon is passionate in its support of bee conservation and continued transparency to consumers.
What sets Manuka honey apart from other types of honey produced around the world?
It was discovered by a university professor in New Zealand that Manuka Honey has amazing health properties that other honey does not.
What sets Wedderspoon honey apart from other brands?
Wedderspoon’s Manuka honey is Raw, Non-GMO verified. Raw Honey is so important because once it is pasteurized you lose the naturally occurring vitamins, polyphenols, and enzymes. We are the only North American based Manuka Honey supplier with our own Safe Quality Foods (SQF) level 3 packing facility in New Zealand.
What is your favorite Wedderspoon product?
I am so excited about our new Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey. Our Apple Cider Vinegar is crafted from Organic cold-pressed apples in small batches in New Zealand without heat or chemical processing. This raw, unpasteurized, and unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar is naturally fermented to preserve the ‘Mother’ of vinegar, a string of beneficial bacteria, enzymes, proteins, and minerals.
Can you give us a sneak peek into any new Wedderspoon products coming to the market?
We are soon to launch in Canada three new functional “ready to drink” Apple Cider Vinegars sweetened only with Manuka Honey, more to come!
What is your favorite way to consume Wedderspoon honey? Any interesting recipes?
I love Manuka Honey in a salad dressing; this is a great recipe for the summer months.
Adulteration of honey is a huge problem around the world. How can consumers be sure that the honey they are purchasing is real?
This is a huge issue around the globe, I would suggest staying away from conventional honey, and looking for raw and unpasteurized. All Wedderspoon Raw Manuka Honey is tested before it leaves the country (according to the New Zealand government Standards) to verify Manuka purity and authenticity.
