There’s so much diversity in this world, whether you’re a man or a woman, old or young, sick or healthy, wealthy or poor, blonde, brunette, red head (or all three, depending on how adventurous you and your stylist are!). The point is, in so many ways we are all so different. But, there are a few common threads between us. On the surface we have the same biological needs, like we all need oxygen to breathe, food to eat and fresh water to drink. We also share a few common emotional threads, as well. We all have a desire for love and companionship. We will all experience some suffering at some point in our lives. And at the end of the day, I believe everyone, no matter who you are or where you live, wants to feel special, once in a while.
I don’t think we should ever need an excuse to be pampered and treated like royalty (I’m sure my partner can corroborate that statement), BUT sometimes it doesn’t hurt to have a scheduled day devoted to YOU. Maybe it’s your birthday, or anniversary. Perhaps Valentine's Day is your day, or in my case, every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday); whatever the day(s), it’s a pre-planned, marked off, without question, time for you to treat yourself (…or be treated, of course!)
November 14th is World Diabetes Day! Almost 400 Million people in the world suffer from the terrible disease – four of which are my family members. The day exists to create advocacy, awareness, to bring the community together and I say, why not let it be a day to remind those battling the disease, to spoil themselves… OR BE SPOILED! (I’m not good with subtle hints, and neither should you be.)
Here’s a diabetes-specific indulgence plan! Enjoy!!
TALK TO THE HAND
No pamper plan is complete with out a mani-pedi. Am I right, ladies?? They are especially important for diabetics because the high insulin levels can cause dehydration in the skin, and the hands and feet to dry out and crack. Also, the spiking sugar levels can cause bacteria to grow quickly, and infections are always a risk. So to keep complications at bay, some major moisturizing is crucial! First, for the feet, SBT Seabuckthorn offers a delicious antibacterial and antifungal salve, with essential oils like thyme and tea tree that will help hydrate, protect and most importantly, pamper those toes.
For the hands, every woman, no matter your health condition, needs a good cuticle cream. Try a cuticle specific product or invest in some good coconut oil and lather it on the edges of the nail beds. The other important digit-demand is a great nail polish. This is also a tricky topic for those with diabetes, because the chemical ‘phthalates’ – commonly found in nail polish and hair spray – has been shown to increase chances of insulin resistance. It’s important to find products without this chemical. Check out the collection of water based, chemical free, peelable polish, by Suncoat. Find the hue that speaks to you, and rock it out. Remember, blue is the official colour of diabetes awareness… I always love dressing in theme!
THE HAIR NECESSITIES
Diabetes can also affect circulation in the body…and when it comes to our hair, circulation is essential to grow strong, healthy and thick strands. So today, your scalp needs a little TLC! Start by massaging in a hair mask. Surya has a treatment enriched with rice protein that will help to strengthen the strands and also a slew of herbal extracts that will condition and restore shine to your locks. Post-mask, it’s important to keep the hydration going. Invest in some good leave-in-conditioner to lock the shine in and make it last.
BATH & BODY WORK
We’ve covered the head and the toes, but we can’t forget to indulge everything in between! A relaxing swim in the tub is an absolute must. When it comes to bubble bath, though always decadent, they can also often be drying. So, it’s important to find one that isn’t going to work against your hydration mission… Try this special chamomile and lavender mixture from EO specially made to moisturize and nurture the skin.
Apres-soak, pat dry the body and get busy with lubrication! No, not like that…or maybe like that if you feel like it. It’s your day, after all. But, I’m referring to coating your skin, head to toe, in a tasty body-butter. Shea Butter is an obvious and fabulous choice. Try Alaffia’s Lavender-Mint version to complete your pampering protocol.
Now that you’ve been spoiled like a supermodel, it’s time to behave like one…in the name of diabetes awareness! The World Diabetes Organization has developed a “selfie app” that will superimpose a blue circle (the official diabetes logo) into your pic! Share your selfie-snap online and spread the support, the word… and your beauty!
