DMSO stands for Dimethylsulfoxide. I know it’s a mouth full. By looking just at the name you could think that it’s some kind of synthetic substance made in a lab, where in fact it actually occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables. DMSO is a sulfur-containing organic compound which indicates that it has some kind of antioxidative and/or anti-inflammatory property. In fact, this is exactly the case.
DMSO is very effective for two main conditions: pain and inflammation. The pain can be of any type but the more common examples that DMSO are effective with are pain due to:
muscles and musculoskeletal pain
There is also strong evidence supporting its use for specific conditions such as:
complex regional pain syndrome
post shingles nerve pain (i.e. post-herpetic neuralgia)
skin eruptions in shingles
tissue necrosis (i.e. prevention of living tissue dying such as in skin burns)
inflammatory bladder disease.
With respect to the last condition, the Food and Drug Administration in the US has approved the use of DMSO for interstitial cystitis, which is a painful inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder.
The mechanism of its anti-pain action is through the inhibition of the C type pain nerve fibers. On the other hand, its skin healing property (in acne, burns, herpes eruptions etc.) is due to its anti-inflammatory property as well as its ability to increase blood circulation to the site of inflammation. Such increased circulation brings more immune cells to the site of damage as well as needed nutrients for the healing to occur. This property can be beneficial for treating skin burns, herpes/shingles skin lesions, acne, skin ulcers or any other skin eruption with an inflammatory component.
Finally with respect to this product one also has to
