This week’s hot product is the New Nordic Blue Berry Eyesight Formula. New Nordic Blue Berry is composed mainly of a blueberry extract, lutein and grape seed extract. And it’s on sale: 50% off this week — a welcome bonus.
extract is one of the richest sources of antioxidants. It contains compounds
called anthrocyanins (a mouthful, I know). Essentially these are pigments that
give fruits, vegetables, flowers, leaves and berries their color. Their main
role is to attract pollinators and animals to feed on the plant material to
promote the dispersion of seeds. They also play important roles in plant
cellular processes. But most importantly, they are powerful antioxidants, which
means that they are also anti-aging. As mentioned in my previous blog on
anti-aging, oxidative damage to our cells, (by way of our normal metabolism as
well as exposure to pollutants, toxins and excessive sunlight), causes our
cells to age quicker. Antioxidants, like the ones found in blueberries, protect
our cells from this damage and promote cellular health.
Lutein And Eye Health
Lutein is a carotenoid compound, from the family of compounds that gives carrots its orange color. Just like anthrocyanins, carotenoids are also antioxidants and protect from cellular damage. Lutein’s benefits the retina to a large extent. The retina is located in the back of our eye and it captures light from the world that we see around us. Once captured, the image is transmitted to the back of the brain where it is interpreted again to produce the image that we see. So what we see is actually not the original picture, but an interpretation of that picture after it has been converted to an electrical signal. Unbelievable — but true.
As we age,
dead cellular debris (or engorged blood vessels) accumulate behind the retina
and lift it away from a structure called choroid. The choroid supplies the
retina with oxygen and nutrients. When the retina lifts away this can cause
progressive blindness or Age-Related Macular Degeneration, a very common
condition, especially in people over 50. Simply put, lutein protects the retina
from developing this condition via its antioxidative quality. It is believed
that the dead cellular debris or the engorged blood vessels that lift off the
retina are caused by oxidation and more particularly free radicals that cause
Grape Seed Extract
have grape seed extract, which is rich in Vitamin E, flavonoids, procyanidins
and linoleic acid. These are all good for you. They protect the eyes from
damage caused by sunlight. They also protect the eyes from aging and protect
the rest of our bodies overall. This is particularly true of flavonoids,
procyanidins and vitamin E. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid required
by our cellular membranes. In the absence of healthy membranes, aging
The bottom line: New Nordic promotes this product as protecting the eye from macular degeneration. But a closer look reveals this to be a great anti-aging product that not only protects the eyes from damage, but our entire organism.
See you next time.
