Dr. Karol Recommends: Nature’s Harmony Saw Palmetto

For those of you who receive our free monthly newsletter, (for details visit, you already know that this month’s Vitarock health focus themes are prostate health and diabetes.

In keeping with the prostate theme, today I’m recommending saw palmetto, the most well-known and most researched natural treatment for prostate enlargement.

Saw palmetto is used for the prevention and treatment of a condition called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). In this condition, the prostate is enlarged but it is not a cancer or a tumour. The prostate is actually a gland, i.e., an anatomical structure that secretes something. It surrounds the urethra, (the tube through which urine flows), between the urinary bladder and the penis.

Under the influence of male sex hormones, this gland begins to enlarge in men aged 30. By the age of 50, 25% of men will have a prostate so enlarged that it causes uncomfortable symptoms. These are: inability to urinate, dribbling, frequent night wakings for urination, pain in the bladder due to the inability to urinate, urinary tract infections and —in the worst case scenario— kidney failure. By the age of 85, 45% of men will have some of these symptoms.

Saw palmetto is a short, palm-like plant that grows in the southeast US, primarily the Florida region. It has been used by Native Americans for prostate problems for millennia. Unlike prescription medications for prostate enlargement, which only work in one way, saw palmetto works in four different ways to decrease the size of the prostate, preventing its enlargement and thus combatting the symptoms of BPH:

1.       Saw palmetto inhibits the enzyme that converts the male sex hormone testosterone to Di-Hydro-Testosterone (DHT). DHT is the hormone responsible for prostate enlargement as well as male pattern baldness.

2.       Saw palmetto blocks the binding of DHT to its receptor. Without this binding, DHT cannot engage or contribute to prostate enlargement.

3.       Saw palmetto decreases inflammation by decreasing the level of prostaglandins. Inflammation causes the prostate to swell up, which contributes to its enlargement and narrows the urethra, causing BPH symptoms.

4.       Saw palmetto decreases the proliferation of prostate cells via a non-hormonal mechanism.

Saw palmetto is not associated with any side effects. In fact, its anti-inflammatory action is beneficial to the entire body. Conversely, prescription meds for prostate enlargement can cause problems with erections, ejaculation as well as a weakened sex drive. These medications can also cause headaches, weakness and nasal congestion.

Instead, try Nature’s Harmony Saw Palmetto. It’s a great product from a great company.
