Essential Guide to Eco-Friendly Exercise

There may be some basics in your workout or movement routine that might be up for an eco-tweak. Here are our top 5 tips to eco-tweak your workout:

1. Choose Glass or Steel Bottles

Are you still drinking out of plastics (including BPA-free) bottles for your water? If not you have a great opportunity to make an easy, positive, impactfull change.

Consider using a reusable stainless steel or glass bottle for your drinks. For convenience, get two different sizes; one smaller, bag-friendly size and one larger for longer, harder workouts.

Hooked on energy drinks? Try Ener-C. It’s a wallet-sized pack of powdered electrolytes, B-vitamins, and extra Vitamin C.

2. External & Internal Deodorants

Let’s be real. This is your sweatiest time of day and you need some hardcore deodorant - without the hardcore toxins. A long-time favourite is Green Beaver Co. Sport 24 Tea Tree Deodorant. This is long-lasting, and the tea tree gives you double protection. Tea tree kills bacteria and bacteria causes the stink.

Need extra-strength protection? Chlorophyll is your stink saviour. Chlorophyll acts as an internal deodorant specifically targeting bad breath and the colon. Chlorophyll acts as a blood cleanser and it works for almost everyone. You can find this in a variety of delicious flavours with Land Art. We love the mint flavour.

3. Washing Workout Wear

After you’ve properly sweated your butt off, you’ll want to wash those sweaty, sometimes salty clothes. Sweat stains can be a bit stubborn. Have some extra powerful laundry cleaner on hand and add some targeted stain removal (eg. for t-shirt armpits). Nature Clean All Purpose Cleaning Lotion is a top pick and can be used for dish detergent, hand soap OR laundry soap. It’s one bottle for so many uses. So eco-exciting! For extra tough yellowing stains, try the Pet Stain & Odour Remover;  it’s really heavy duty, and if your clothes are beyond bearable, then let them soak for 30 minutes, then continue with the washing cycle.

Want a scented laundry detergent? Make your own with Aura Cacia Essential Oil - Lemon-Eucalyptus. It only takes a drop or two. For a great floral scent, try Jasmine.

4. Face & Body Care For All

Sometimes with sweat comes acne. This could be from your skin detoxifying or simply from frequently wiping your sweat away, transferring dirt and oils to your face. Chances are you’re also having extra showers that strip natural oils, prompting oil glands to work harder to replenish those washed away. For these reasons, take a gentler, antibacterial approach. You don’t need to get fancy, just your basics. These are great for both men and women.

Face wash can be harsh and sudsy. You want gentle. MyChelle Fruit Enzyme Cleanser does the trick and doesn’t leave your skin feeling stripped of the good oils.  This is a Vitarock staff favourite!

The importance of a toner is to close your pores and soothe your skin. Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe might be your new best beauty friend. Reducing redness, it’s oh-so-gentle and the aloe is soothing.  You can also use as after-shave, or apply under your arms as a pre-deodorant. This is another staff favourite!

Keep your face cream light and hypoallergenic with Weleda White Mallow Face Cream. It comes in a small travel size (which we love) so it fits in your yoga or gym bag.

For shampoo and body wash we keep it cool, simple and classic with Dr. Bronner’s Eucalyptus Oil Castile Soap. Eucalyptus has a cooling sensation, that feels amazing when you’re trying to cool off from a workout, and it’s so small it bag sized friendly.

Now you’re squeaky clean and you want to be silky soft with body lotion without having to wait for it to absorb or risk staining your clothes. We’ve tested them and our pick is Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion. It even comes in a small travel size.

5. Supplement Packaging

Depending on which supplements or packaged natural foods you’re fueling with, chances are you could minimize the impact of the packaging. Look for protein in bags versus chunky plastic tubs. Consider reusing some of those glass supplement bottles for herbs or small home storage solutions. If you are not going to reuse the packaging, be sure to recycle.

Now get outside, dust it off, and work it! It’ll feel great to know your fresh air workout is more harmonious with the environment.
