Borage oil is one of the richest sources of gamma-linolenic acid (a type of omega-6 fat commonly known as GLA), containing up to 4 times more GLA than the equivalent dose of evening primrose oil. Up to 1/4 of the total fat content of borage seed oil is GLA. Borage oil has been traditionally used as a dietary supplement to reduce inflammation. Scientific research supports the use of borage oil to alleviate symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis/gingivitis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome, while GLA can be therapeutic for diabetic neuropathy. GLA-rich oils are also used by some women to reduce PMS (premenstrual syndrome) discomfort.
