May Makeover!

It may be a daunting task to clear out the old, but giving your makeup bag an eco-friendly makeover is not only good for the earth, it’s better for your health. Transitioning (even slowly) from makeup made with synthetic ingredients to makeup made with naturally-derived ingredients is a part of an overall detox program. Think about it. Your skin is the largest organ in the body, and everything you put on it eventually makes it to the blood stream. Studies show that a significant number of “conventional” makeup brands rely on a heavy use of ingredients that are classified as endocrine disruptors, which can interfere with your hormonal balance.

3 Tips to Makeover Your Makeup Bag

1.       Dump it all out, and analyze. Take a hint from the effortlessly-chic women of France: less is more.  Go through your purse, makeup bag, gym bag and anywhere else you keep your makeup. Set it all out, and think: how old is each product, do I use it every day, and can I replace it with something a little more natural?

2.      A bare canvas. Be sure to exfoliate your skin (we like MyChelle Fruit Enzyme Scrub). Tone and moisturize before applying your base layer for the day, be it a foundation or a lighter variety like a tinted BB cream. The result will be much smoother skin, and longer-wearing makeup, not to mention the perfect canvas for applying the rest of your makeup. The BB cream craze has been virtually unavoidable. Even if you don’t know what it is, I’m sure you’ve heard of it. In Asia, it’s been a standby for years. The concept first became popular with Korean and Japanese celebrities. The “BB” stands for “beauty balm”, a trusty combo of tinted moisturizer, serum, primer and SPF. I’ve recently discovered a more natural variety with Pacifica Alight multi-mineralBB cream. It’s a tinted moisturizer with many benefits. It hydrates, primes, illuminates, and perfects, leaving a sheer, bare skin finish.  In addition, this formula contains high performance antiaging botanical ingredients that revive and re-mineralize skin for a natural glow. If you feel that you need a tiny bit more coverage, you might try Logona Natural Finish Foundation. Has a nice clean scent, the consistency is great, and it gives an effortless “no makeup” makeup look.

3.       For that fresh, perky look. Again, following with the less is more concept, mascara is essential to get that “slept ten hours” look.  Pacifica Stellar Gaze Mascara is infused with coconut oil and vitamin B to hydrate each lash as it lengthens, strengthens and adds volume. Apply for a natural look by day, or layer for more volume for night. Plus, their brush is 100% vegan (no animal whisker bristles). Mascara should ideally be replaced every four months, just to be on the safe side, to avoid any contamination.

What’s in my makeup bag?

Here are a few things that I carry all the time, whether I’m running errands or on a long flight.

Ener-C Vitamin C sachets are a great thing to have on you. Simply add to water. Having that extra boost of vitamin C throughout the day keeps my skin glowing and my immune system at full capacity. The extra energy doesn't hurt either!

I use Aura Cacia Organic Rosehip Oil as a multi-purpose, do-everything product: from moisturizing my cuticles to spreading a few drops on my face in the afternoon for a little glow.

While We’re In My Makeup Bag

Finally, to keep my breath fresh, I like Pur Gum sugar- and aspartame-free gum. And because I’m a germaphobe, lately I’m keeping a mini 30mL of thyme infused CleanWell hand sanitizer with me at all times.

Enjoy your fresh, pure, clean new look this summer!
