You may be familiar with this ancient ritual of nasal irrigation (sounds sexy, no?), or you may have always wondered what those super small tea pots were doing in the body care section of your local natural products store.
Neti pots were popularized by Oprah and Dr. Oz in 2007, touting them for their ability to relieve sinus and allergy symptoms. Since then, asking someone “Do you neti?” doesn’t seem quite as odd.
Top reasons to embrace the neti pot
1. It’s cheaper
than pharmaceuticals or supplements for allergies and sinus infections. For a fraction of the cost of a packet of cold & flu tablets or a bottle of the natural alternative, you can have your very own, reusable neti pot. Either plastic or ceramic (I prefer plastic for travel and ceramic for at home use) can last years, and can be used as often as needed. Two favourite pots are Himalayan Institute Eco Neti Pot, made from BPA-free, biodegradable plastic. For a more classic version, the Himalayan Ceramic Neti Pot. Here's a link to their how-to-video (scroll to bottom of page).
2. A clear mind
Not only does it perform amazing relief of sinus and allergy symptoms, the neti pot is very effective at clearing the head of stuffiness, as well as for headaches and migraines.
The yogi’s believed that clear breathing led to clear thinking; therefore, by purifying the nose, a higher state of meditation could be achieved. You may not be OM-ing yourself to higher consciousness, but even if you’ve simply had a rough day commuting in traffic, taking 5 minutes to neti, will leave you feeling like a million bucks!
3. A traveler’s best friend
Travel easier when you can have an ally against airborne germs in an airplane. Recycled, stagnant air is breeding ground for germs. Traveling with a plastic neti pot is the key. When you arrive at your destination, just add a pinch of Himalayan Institute Neti Pot Salt to pure, warm water, and let it flow through your nostrils – taking all those germs you just inhaled, with it. Finish by applying a tiny drop of oil, like Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Oil, inside each nostril to lubricate and protect.
