Pain Management~part 2
Pain Management.

To continue with my previous blog on the subject, what are natural, safe, green, and clean remedies which we can use to substitute prescription pain medications? Well here is the list of some of the most effective ones.

Devil’s Claw root comes from a plant which has been shown in numerous studies to be effective in substantially reducing pain in patients with arthritic conditions of different joints. It is more useful for chronic (long term) pain. Boswellia (Frankincense)has been used in Indian medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of arthritic conditions and asthma, and Ginger, which is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, is especially useful for respiratory tract infections. Seabuckthorn is a plant which contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant compound Quercetin. It has been shown to help strengthen small blood vessels, and to be helpful in chronic inflammatory conditions. Others are Bromelain, which decreases the levels of prostaglandins (these compounds have been shown to be largely responsible for pain, especially the pain in pre-menstrual syndrome), and Turmeric, which belongs to the ginger family, and contains the active ingredient Curcumin.  This last compound is capable of decreasing the levels of cytokines, another group of chemical signaling molecules responsible for inflammation and pain.

The list of ailments for which the above listed compounds may be effective ranges form arthritis, to tendonitis, musculoskeletal tension, auto-immune disorders, asthma, and trauma related pain, just to name a few. The underlying pathological process in all of these conditions is excessive inflammation, and all the compounds listed have anti-inflammatory activity.

The last final comment on the subject of pain, that I could not ignore, is the clinical importance of medicinal cannabis. The cannabis strains which have been shown to have less THC and more Canabidiol (the two major active ingredients in cannabis) have been found to be potent anti-inflammatory compounds. They also have the ability to decrease pain, alleviate depression, increase appetite, and increase the sensation of well being while at the same time not be as psycho active (i.e. not making the patient as intoxicated) as the strains with a high THC content.

These health properties have been shown to be very useful and effective in conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, ALS, glaucoma, depression, epilepsy, and chronic pain conditions such as arthritis. Furthermore, for those of you who think that this is only an illicit drug, you can actually request the medicinal strains without any impurities legally from Health Canada after an application process with your family doctor.

I know the overall message on pain management has been long, but the point is this. Let’s get to the root of pain by fighting inflammation with natural compounds which are much less or not at all harmful to us, instead of just covering up the problem with much more toxic and addictive synthetic alternatives. By spreading this message around we can help a lot of people in pain. Let’s stay healthy and pain free my friends!
