The signs of aging vary greatly from person-to-person This makes sense as we all have a different genetic make-up, diets, environmental influences, and behaviours. Generally speaking, I’m sure we’re all well-versed in the most common ways to stay youthful: no smoking , regular exercise, eating a balanced diet (including super foods!), limiting excessive time in the sun, getting proper rest, and a multitude of anti-aging products (for your skin or consumption). Despite the variation in aging among us all, there is a common observation that scientists have been researching more recently called “telomeres.” You might have heard of telomeres alongside aging or anti-aging.
What Are Telomeres?
Let’s start with the basics: your genetic coding is your DNA, which are packaged up into structures called chromosomes. Telomeres are the ‘end parts’ of chromosomes, and have a repeated genetic sequence, which helps to protect the end of the chromosomes from deteriorating.
How Are Telomeres Related to Aging?
Each time cells divide, telomeres get shorter. Therefore, cells are limited to a fixed amount of divisions, which results in a limited lifespan. We know this because research has shown that longer telomeres result in longer lifespans and shorter telomeres are related to shorter lifespans. This begs the question: is there anything we can do to keep from aging? As scary as it sounds (for some people more than others), aging is inevitable. However, every person has the power to make the right “age-delaying” choices in their life by adjusting the mind and body in the optimal ways to stay healthy.
How to Maintain Telomere Health
It’s been suggested that physiological stresses (including oxidative stresses in your body’s cells) can lead to shorter telomeres and ultimately lead to accelerated aging. Therefore, you can try to keep your telomeres as healthy as possible by making the right choices. After all, there is that saying “you are what you eat.” Making the right choices for foods and supplements is one major way to have a positive impact on your aging. No product should promise that it stops aging, however, there are certain product/food choices that can help maintain your health, including our well-known health allies: antioxidants! Antioxidants help to reduce oxidative stress in the body at a cellular level (oxidative stress is when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals (these can damage cells) and the ability of the body to counteract or neutralize the oxidative stress with sufficient antioxidants). That’s why antioxidants are so important - they offer help to lower systemic oxidative stress.
